In Los Angeles in 1943, sailors on leave attacked young Mexican-American men in the streets because they didn't like the "Zoot Suits" they were wearing. These were the Zoot Suit Riots. The sailors thought the flamboyant suits used too much material that could have been better used in the war effort. The LA City Council eventually banned Zoot Suits, but this ban was later reversed. Zoot Suit Riot by the Cherry Poppin' Daddies tells the tale and Richard gets the gold (and an honorary Zoot Suit).
